Strawberries are one of the most popular fruits in the world. Their red color, delicate taste, and aromatic fragrance have made them into a gastronomic icon.

Their origin and history is full of legends and myths: In Ancient Rome, strawberries were linked to the Festival of Adonia, since the legend says the origin of this fruit comes from Adonis’ death, when Venus dropped tears that turned into strawberries upon touching the ground.

Nevertheless, the most interesting fact related to strawberries is their curious origin, because the strawberries we currently consume never existed in nature. In fact, the strawberries we all know are called Fragaria ananassa (something like pineapple strawberry), and they are a mix of three different strawberry varieties: Fragaria moschata (from Europe), Fragaria virginiana (from the United States), and Fragaria chiloensis (from Chile). It was during the 18th century that an explorer and merchant at the service of Louis XVI, Amedée-François Frézier, took several samples of Chilean strawberry to France. Then, in 1764, the still incipient French botanist Antoine Nicolas Duchesne crossbred this variety with the European strawberry and then with the Virginian strawberry, obtaining a bigger and tastier strawberry.

In addition to their characteristic fragrance, their shiny color, and their delicious taste, strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C and manganese. Besides, their consumption provides good amounts of folic acid and potassium.
