The history of pomegranates dates back millennia, originally from the region comprising from Iran to the north of the Himalayas in India, it was grown and naturalized at least 5,000 years ago in western Asia and northern Africa; it was planted in the hanging gardens of Babylon and is sculpted in Egyptian bas-reliefs.

This fruit was specially appreciated in desertic zones, as it is protected from desiccation due to its thick skin, which allowed caravans to transport it over long distances, preserving its valued qualities. It was precisely the Berbers who took this fruit to Europe, from where it was then scattered to other regions, and it is popularly affirmed that the city of Granada in Spain owes its name to the fruit.

The arils commercialized by Hortifrut are the edible seeds of pomegranates, which are high in vitamin B and C, as well as antioxidants.

Its frequent consumption may help reduce joint swelling in people who suffer from arthritis, and it also helps prevent high cholesterol, heart diseases, and arteriosclerosis.
